I have played tennis 21 years.  Ranked in juniors and adults.  Played on a high school tennis team for 3 years
and in college walked-on to the  Southeastern Louisiana University tennis team in 1989 under coach Jim
Hunter.

I worked as the Tennis Director (coaching children, teenagers and adults) which involved administering and
managing a National Junior League Tennis program at Independence Park.  Presently, I am playing on a Baton
Rouge men's 4.5 tennis team.

Do I need tennis lessons?
Group lessons offered by an experienced professional are an effective learning tool.  Players can learn through guided discovery, by contrasting
their shots and shot selection with others, and it is fun- which is the biggest key to motivation.
Private lessons are important when players need to learn or improve a specific skill.  Use a private lesson as one way to shore up some
weaknesses.  Approach the private lesson with a specific plan though.  In other words, tell the teaching pro exactly what your goals and
expectations are prior to walking on-court.  This will help the coach immensely in pinpointing what you are missing and assure that you find
what you are seeking. A rule of thumb is that players should play around three times (in group drills or match play) between private lessons.

So, a healthy mix is ideal.  Make sure that you are getting plenty of match experience too.  Playing tournaments is one thing, but a lot of learning
comes when players simply play practice sets.  This can seem less structured than other activities, but learning and improvement comes when
players decide for themselves what they need to do on-court to succeed.
